Why your silver turns dark (and what to do about it)

Hey friend, Last week we talked about copper patina — how it's normal, natural, and actually a sign your piece is alive and breathing. Today I want to tackle the other question I get on repeat: Why does my sterling silver turn dark? And what do I do about it? Deep breath. Tarnish is not damage. Here's what's actually happening: 🔬 Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper). That small percentage is what causes tarnish — it reacts with sulfur in the air, your skin's natural chemistry, certain lotions, perfumes, even humidity. 🖤 That dark color is called silver sulfide — a thin layer on the surface of the metal. It's completely normal and doesn't hurt the silver at all. 💨 Air is the biggest culprit. Leaving silver out on a dresser speeds things up significantly. A simple zip-lock bag, squeeze the air out, and the tarnish slows way down. (Yes, a regular zip-lock. It really works.) 🧴 Lotion, perfume, and hairspray are not your jewelry's friends. Get dressed first, jewelry last. That simple habit makes a bigger difference than anything else. And when it does tarnish — here's how I clean it: My go-to is a soft cloth and a tiny bit of plain toothpaste (non-gel). Rub gently, rinse with warm water, pat dry. Your piece will look brand new. For heavier tarnish, a jewelry polishing cloth works beautifully and won't scratch. One thing to avoid: ultrasonic cleaners on pieces with stones. The vibration can loosen settings over time. Just stick to the cloth. Your Pintody pieces are made to last a lifetime with a little love. I hope this helps. ✨ Stay Wild Lynda P.S. Any care questions at all — just reply. I love talking about this stuff more than is probably normal for a person.
